5 Tips To Be A Better Moderator & New Role Unlocked!

5 Tips For Being a Better Moderator

By: Felix Adam

1. Always check for new players, this will prevent confusion in the early game.

2. As a loose construct, the deck should be: 50% Villagers, 25% Wolf Team, 25% Villagers with abilities (Seer, Hunter, Etc).

3. Always make sure to avoid meta, move around the circle constantly and never stand in front of a player when announcing a role or effect.

4. Make sure that all players know how each role works and clearly explain each role before the game.

5. Make sure as the game moves round to round that you facilitate the shrinking of the chairs in the circle. This will make it easier for players to hear each other and also give an intimate and much more intense game.

Art Highlight: Bringing The Villager To Life!

Behind The Scenes - Creating The Villager

See the classic Villager morph into his EXTREME self with these early model shots and sketches. This is our favorite take on this character yet, and these early looks at artist Christine Mitzuk's process are so interesting. Way more than meets the eye at first glance!

The Finished Product

While EVERYONE always claims this role - some people really don't like being dealt it! However the plain ol' Villagers play a crucial role in keeping the mystery thick!

Q&A with Designer Ted Alspach!
over 3 years ago – Thu, Oct 01, 2020 at 04:04:21 AM

What sparked the idea for Ultimate Werewolf Extreme?

The artwork for Ultimate Werewolf has always been adequate, but I wanted something truly extraordinary. That was the reason we brought on two amazing artists for this project. The artwork took over two years to create, but it is absolutely awesome.

Once we knew we were going to do all new art, I realized that there were many aspects that I wanted to improve and redo, which resulted in a pretty much an entirely new game. You’ll see some things from Ultimate Werewolf here, such as balance numbers and role descriptions on each card. However, the wake order, new info values, and all sorts of hidden information have been added to each of the cards to help moderators run the games better, while not distracting players. In addition, there are new roles that really enhance gameplay and replayability.

How did you choose the artists for this edition? Which card art is your favorite?

Simon Aan was chosen because of his fantastic work on Ultimate Werewolf Legacy. Christine Mitzuk is an amazingly talented fantasy artist who creates characters with dynamic poses and expressions. Each piece of art tells a story that draws you further into the game. One of my favorites is the Wolfman, who has this incredible pose, with the classic ripped pants. He looks like he might be howling at the moon, or he’s just gone through a painful transformation, or he’s ready to take on all comers. The detail, as with all of Christine’s artwork, is phenomenal.

How did you come up with the concept for the new app?

The new Werewolf app is something that werewolf moderators have wanted for a long time. There are several pain points for moderators that this app solves:

First, it addresses the issue of setting up a deck for the number of players in the game. While you can do this manually, the app creates an infinite number of role sets for you based on different criteria, which you can then use for physical cards.

Second, It allows for quick scanning of each player, their name, and their role into the app. No more taking 10 minutes on the first night of the game to write down everyone’s role. This is incredibly useful for moderators, and this data is then used for the final part of the app:

Lastly, it helps you moderate the game, by walking you through each of the steps that take place each night and day, tracking who has been eliminated, who has used their powers, and notifying you when a team has reached their victory conditions. It’s going to be hard to moderator without the app once you start using it!

How do you typically come up with ideas for new roles?

New roles appear in various ways. Often times they are a result of seeing some sort of limitation imposed by the game and seeing if a role can get around that limitation. For instance, the Seer breaks the most basic of rules that says you can’t see anyone else’s cards - she gets to know if one player is a werewolf at night or not. That’s super basic, but when expanded, it turns into roles like the brand new Illuminati, which literally learns every single player’s role on the first night of the game. It seems like it wouldn’t work, but playtesting showed just the opposite. Not only did it work, but it’s super tough to win, even with all of that knowledge.

What role is your favorite to play?

I’m always most excited about new roles, so roles like the Illuminati are really exciting when I get them. I love being a werewolf (regular or special), though, as it forces you to think about how others are perceiving you, but you have to do it in a way that doesn’t draw attention to yourself.
